| I Am "Will" (Smith) - contains spoilers, skip this post if you haven't seen the movie yet |
| Thursday, January 03, 2008 |
First, I gotta say, whatever movie, whatever genre, if it's Will Smith...it's friggin' awesome!
Loosely based on a 50's novel also called "I Am Legend" the movie deals with Will Smith's character "Robert Neville" as he (and the movie audience) goes through a number of emotions as the monotony of his solitary life suddenly crumbles to the point of almost paralyzing fear.
The "abandoned bank" scene had me holding my breath the entire time! I didn't know if I should be more scared for "Robert" or his dog "Sam."
That is until I saw the "mutated victims"... Puhleeeeze! I thought it was I-Robot part 2! They should've stuck with actual human actors regardless of the "mutants" seeming like the monsters in those "28 days" films.
But putting that teeny criticism aside, like I said, Will Smith, as always, gave another stellar performance.
From his quips (probably an attempt to lighten the dark ominous feel of the movie), to his conversations with his dog "Sam," to when he had to euthanize "Sam" when she got infected (that scene just killed me!).
You just feel every single bout of emotion he's feeling in a particular scene.
Now, I can't help but compare this film to another movie, and nope, not the "28 days" movies despite its numerous similarities but more of "War of the Worlds" the Tom Cruise version.
Three-fourths of sheer terror and then... poof! The movie all of a sudden makes you go "huh?!"
For "War of the Worlds," it's the tripods sudden death for no apparent reason (until Morgan Freeman narration explained it) and for "I Am Legend" it's the sudden appearance of other human beings.
I was anticipating the appearance of other non-infected humans I just felt that the storyline kinda went downhill from there.
Eh! But that's just me.
But I would like to stress once again how well Will Smith did in this movie. If anything, see the movie for him.
By the way, what is it with the song "Three Little Birds" and Will Smith? It's like his unofficial anthem! I mean first on "Shark Tale" and now on "I Am Legend" too. Oh well, at least I got a little history lesson on why "the great Bob Marley" is so great.
Oh and kudos to Will Smith's kid Willow Smith for her short but cute stint in the film. I guess the Smith kids got their parents' acting genes.Labels: i am legend, movie reviews |

| battle of the fratpackers |
| Sunday, August 26, 2007 |
I just realized that I haven't blogged about anything for this month so here goes...
MOVIE REVIEW TIME!!! And my two picks are films starring my favorite two fratpackers, Steve Carell (y'all know him as the boss in The Office American version) & Will Ferrell (the dude who streaked in Old School).
 BLADES OF GLORY
If you're looking for something along the lines of "Stranger than Fiction" or "Bewitched" you can forget about it. This is classic Will Ferrell ( think "Anchorman" and "Talladega Nights"). Will Ferrell plays the arrogant jerk of a champion skater and Jon Heder, of Napoleon Dynamite fame, plays the goodie-two-shoes nerdy rival who also happens to be another champion skater. The two meet, get into a fight, gets disqualified from "the game" and are thrown together by fate to get back in "the game" as an unconventional couple who enters pairs skating. The result... a movie with an extremely simple and almost pointless storyline but with insanely funny moments that would make you wince and laugh out loud at the same time. Man! You should see the moves they came up with! Funny funny stuff! If you're looking for something light this is definitely the movie to see.
 EVAN ALMIGHTY
Steve Carell rocks in any movie he's in! Including this one. A Bruce Almighty spin-off with Morgan Freeman still playing God (if you're thinking that Jim Carrey or Jennifer Aniston might make a cameo sorry, not gonna happen). God makes Evan build an ark for a gargantuan flood that would actually NOT be coming from rain which is what we all expected (ha! not as predictable as you thought it would be!). If you haven't seen the movie yet I'm not gonna go spoil it for yah.:) It's fun watching Steve Carell's character struggling to get rid of the inevitable, which was him being followed by pairs and pairs of all kinds of animals you could ever think of and also his physically turning into "Noah," although, him trying to get of the beard-that-won't-stop-growing was reminiscent of Tim Allen's "Santa Clause," he still did pretty good. This is more of a family movie than "Blades of Glory" but not in a corny way. Watch it too if you have the chance. Plus for Gilmore Girls fans, you get to see Lauren Graham again (sigh... i miss Gilmore Girls).
Well, that's about it I guess. The last 2 movies I got to see for this month.
Oh and if by chance you hear Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison" or Erasure's "A Little Respect" playing while passing by my blog, my apologies. There's a much more cooler version of "A Little Respect" by Wheatus but i couldn't find it anywhere on project playlist. I'm in the midst of a "SCRUBS" marathon and those darned songs came up. And for some insane reason i just can't get any of those that friggin' songs out of my head! Double frick!!!
Adios!Labels: movie reviews, steve carell, will farrell |

| definitely "more than meets the eye!" |
| Tuesday, July 17, 2007 |

yeah, yeah. i know i was supposed to review harry potter but i haven't seen it yet. i'll see it this friday...i think.
anyway, after hearing my officemates raving about transformers and after listening to them telling me, no wait...ordering me to go see the movie, i finally went ahead and saw it. and let me tell you...it was A-MA-HAY-ZING!!!
i liked watching transfomers as a kid. i remember watching it with my guy cousin. for some reason i remember that it came before or after rainbowbrite or was it care bears. the memory escapes me now. i wasn't really a diehard fanatic or anything but i stayed glued to the tv for the entire time transformers was on.
i don't remember the names of the autobots or the decepticons or the constructicons or even the humans on the show for that matter (never forgot their theme song though) but this movie made me want to kick myself for not remembering or paying too much attention to it then.
the movie was perfect! the robots transforming to their respective cars, trucks and plane counterparts was exactly how i imagined it would be if the transformers turned 3D (or is it 4D now).
the plot made sense. warring alien superspecies battling it out on earth (yet again) for ownership of the allspark (the cube). whoever finds the allspark wins. if the the autobots win, earth and humans will live. if the decepticons win, earth is doomed. for a more complete synopsis click here. i'll give you one guess about who ends up winning.:)
the human characters in the movie made sense. shia la beouf (sam witwicky) was unbelievable as the human lead of the film. me thinks even stevens was a good stepping stone for him. hehe. seriously, this guy is someone to watch out for. he was pretty good in constantine and disturbia. and props to megan fox (mikaela banes) and josh duhamel (captain lennox) as well.
the movie may have its flaws, especially to them true blue fans. like maybe why bumblebee went from being a volkswagen to a camaro (whatever bumblebee turns into, i love him!). and why spike witwicky turned into sam witwicky. and why hugo weaving is portraying megatrons voice instead of the original guy since optimus prime is still being portrayed by the original guy.
but who the hell cares?!
inconsistencies aside, the movie was just the perfect movie version of the cartoon.
whether you're a transformers fan or not, you will surely enjoy this one.
so for those who haven't seen it yet...what are you waiting for?! GO SEE THE MOVIE!
i really hope the sequels wouldn't be as commercialized as the spiderman and fantastic 4 sequels. the dancing?! yiiiiiiiii! for shame!!! you think they'd stop at making peter parker dance but nooooooo... they had to make mr. fantastic dance too! what the hell is the matter with you people?! stop it with the dancing!!!Labels: movie reviews, transformers |

| Harry Potter and the Month that made J.K. Rowling richer |
| Friday, July 13, 2007 |
Man would I love to be J.K. Rowling this month!
First the 5th Potter movie is released this week.
Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix
And from what I hear, it's everything a Potter fan could ever imagine and maybe even more. Mitch says you'd really want to murder Umbridge in this one. I'll be seeing the movie tomorrow so its very likely that this post would be updated again by tomorrow for my review of the flick. I hope I'll like this one coz I wasn't such a big fan of the 4th movie.
The book, in the meantime, the very final installment in the most infamous series of childrens (yeah right, more adults are reading this than the kids) books in the 21st century, is finally done and will be released next week.
Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
Well, next Saturday to be exact. Can't wait! I'm really more excited about the book right now. I wanna know who ends up surviving ...Harry Potter or Voldemort.Labels: harry potter, movie reviews |

| the lucky number 13 |
| Sunday, June 10, 2007 |

i've been watching way too much viva la bam this past week (is it just me or is ryan dunn actually hotter than bam margera?). and after seeing idiotic but entertaining contests and scavenger hunts and houses or cars get totalled and witnessing the horror and sometimes amusement on the margera's and don vito's (yo!) faces, watching the third installment of the ocean's series just topped off my testosterone-filled week.
i wasn't a fan of ocean's 12 and i actually thought that the 2nd ocean's was the last and that going through with a third would be overkill but man i was wrong.
it was a lot like ocean's 11, where you don't understand anything that's happening at first but you just can't help but continue watching because of all the man-candy. and then comes the main event where everything comes together and all you can do is stare dumbly at the movie screen and go "ohhh! so that's what that scene was for!" and then try hard to restrain yourself from giving the movie a standing ovation.
in ocean's 13, "willie bank" (al pacino)is the new "terry benedict" (andy garcia) of the movie. he's the main villain now. and "terry benedict" is now part of "ocean's" (george clooney) crew as the financer of the whole clever heist.
the movie revolves around how "ocean" gets revenge for what "bank" did to "reuben" (elliot gould). "ocean" has to figure out a way to bring down the most sophisticated and indestructible casino security system in the world in just a span of three and a half minutes for "bank" to lose a lot of money (think half a billion) on his new casino's grand opening night.
oh yeah, watch out for oprah on this one. she play's a major role here.
just go watch ocean's 13. you will not regret seeing this one i promise. this sequel definitely kick's spiderman 3's ass!
yeeeeeeeeessh! i still can't get emo spidey singing and dancing ala-broadway out of my head! stupid crappy movie. watch ocean's 13!!!Labels: movie reviews, ocean's 13 |
